About St. Mary's

Welcome!

St. Mary's In-The-Hills is a caring church community dedicated to loving God with all that we are and loving our neighbors as Christ has loved us. We gather together to pray, to listen to the God who has called us, to find our place at the Common Table and partake of the Compassion broken open and the Love poured out in the Sacrament, and to find ourselves wrapped up in God's work in the world. Along the way, we are becoming companions of God and one another, sharing our laughter, our grief, our joy, and our burdens. Along the way, we find that we belong, that our life and each life we encounter has depth and meaning.

What we are about.

1

Prayer & Worship

Encounter with God. In Christ, we are invited to live our live saturated by the divine life. That's Christianity's open secret: a life lived in encounter with God, a life shaped by prayer--each of us individually and also together in a life of prayer in common, of Common Prayer, in communion with one another. At the center of our prayer is our common worship, the liturgy of the Word and the Holy Eucharist, in which we enter the mystery of Christ's passion, God's heart of love broken open for the life of the world.

2

Community

Together. We don't encounter God alone. We believe that isolation and loneliness can be deadly, and God longs to deliver us from ourselves by giving us to one another in community. The life we live before God is a life in common. So, we show up to pray together, to grieve together, to laugh together, to doubt and wonder and dream together. And along the way we find the Spirit is knitting us together in one body, the body of Christ.

3

Service

For others. God does not call us into God's own love and into this community of faith and companionship for ourselves alone, but for all people. All who are weary and long for rest, all who are alone and long for community, all who are hurting and long for peace. And so we seek out the others to whom God has called us in compassion and mercy, healing what we can, working for justice and peace, for the good of all God's children.

4

Vision

Forever. This common life is a message to the world, but our work is never finished. Because God's work of re-weaving all of creation is not yet finished. God is forever leading us home, so we are constantly listening to where the Spirit is taking us, to what grand new adventure God has in store for us as we follow Jesus, the Anointed One. That vision is incomplete without you. Is God calling you to be a part of our journey?

What we do.

Our Worship

In accord with the Book of Common Prayer, our worship together is deepened by reflection on the Scriptures and centered on the Sacrament of Holy Eucharist. These Holy Mysteries hold us fast and help us to awaken to the wonder of the holiness all around us. We worship together, young ones and not-so-young,

Our Community

Ask just about anyone at St. Mary's what they love about our church, and they'll tell you: the people. We love to have fun together. We rally when we're hurting. We make music together, and we have interesting conversations. Most of all, we care for one another.

Our Service

We must be saved together.
We cannot go to God alone;
else He would ask
“Where are the others?”

~ Charles Peguy

Do not grieve or complain that you were born in a time when you can no longer see God in the flesh. He did not in fact take this privilege from you. As He says, "Whatever you have done to the least of these my brothers and sisters, you did to me."

~ St. Augustine

Our Vision

My Lord God,
I have no idea where I am going.
I do not see the road ahead of me.
I cannot know for certain where it will end.
nor do I really know myself,
and the fact that I think I am following your will
does not mean that I am actually doing so.
But I believe that the desire to please you
does in fact please you.
And I hope I have that desire in all that I am doing.
I hope that I will never do anything apart from that desire.

And I know that if I do this you will lead me by the right road,

though I may know nothing about it.

~ Thomas Merton
